ARE KENYAN MEN LOSING THEIR MASCULINITY?

First it was tight jeans, then came t-shirts with plunging neck-lines, and now, its the bright coloured shoes that men wear. Yes, you guessed it right, men are competing with women when it comes to femininity. Need I talk about the facials, manicures and pedicures that men are going for nowadays?

Before you jump on me and call me a feminist, look at this scenario. A man was (a few years back) expected to be the breadwinner of the family. You know, the masculine one? The one who protected the woman and his family from predators, devils(yes, he was expected to have this supernatural power that could conquer anything). Fast forward a few years later, namely 2009 and beyond. The man of the house is too engrossed in his looks. Salon appointments, shopping (a past-time associated with the female folk) and to make matters worse, the clothes they come home with after shopping would confuse you. As a woman, am I not the one expected to be in figure-hugging clothes?

So, there is your 21st century man. What defines his calendar? Shopping, salon-visits, and his looks. In as much as we want a well-groomed man, we still need men who can stand out in society and be counted. A man who is "masculine", not necessarily in the physical sense but in the sense that he steps up when he is called up to be a "man".

When I was a kid, girls played with dolls and makeup while the boys engaged in more "macho" toys like cars, toy-guns etc. Even when it came to dressing up, the boys dressed up like Spiderman, Superman, Zorro and many other masculine icons. It is a pity when we grow up and the toys that they play with seem to be changing. Make-up and the mirror seem to be what the men are engrossed in.

I am not saying that grooming for males is bad, but it is a problem when looks take centre stage for a man. When a man spends more time in front of a mirror than a woman does, when he puts on pants that are figure-hugging and defining his form, when he puts on t-shirts with a plunging neckline, then one is left to wonder, does a man have a cleavage to show off?

Where are the "men" in society? The men who would get down to work without worrying about his manicured nails? The men who would stand up and defend himself when he is under attack? How do we entrust the men to defend us in times of crisis when they cannot defend themselves?

Ocampo names Hague Six

At exactly 2pm, Kenyan time, ICC's chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno Ocampo stood by his words and earlier promise and released the 2007 post election violence suspects. Speaking from the ICC headquaters in the Hague, Mr. Ocampo maintained that the six have not yet been convicted and are just mere suspects. In the country, the news was received with condemnation from both MPs and the entire cabinet, with the Vice President, Mr. Kalonzo Musyoka claiming that the International Court "has violated the rules of natural justice by naming suspects before an application is made." 

The list includes: Chepalungu MP, Isaac Ruto, Deputy Prime Minister, Uhuru Kenyatta, Retired General, Hussein Ali, Francis Muthaura, and Mr.Joshua Arap Sang, who is a radio jaournalist.

Meanwhile, US President, Barrack Obama has called on all Kenyans to co-operate with the ICC.

Mama G in Kenya

Popular Nollywood actress, Mrs. Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G is in the country to grace the annual Tafrija Festivals, which are being hosted by the Nigerian High Commission. This is a cultural event that showcases Kenyan artistic talents. Mama G, who has graced more than 200 films is also a singer, and she took the music scene by storm when she released her album, National Moi Moi. She is set to share the stage with local artistes. Contrary to the wicked stepmother roles that she plays on stage, Mama G is a role model to many and she is a widow and a mother of four. Her firstborn is an engineer while the last is a footballer with Rangers international, Enugu. She has been a teacher, a broadcaster and owner of a fashion institute before she ventured into acting.

When fair fights turn into hate speech

I love facebook, infact I confess to being a facebook addict (okay, everywhere I go am always clicking away on my phone, sending inboxes and viewing notifications. Any rehab ideas?) So, yes, facebook is my addiction, my drug and the antidote. So, one day I am in my usual Facebook mode when I open this famous person's page and the things I see there make me seeth with anger and freeze with disbelieve. Can you imagine a person we have enlisted to be a leader writing something like "HATA NIKIPIMWA NI YA NINI NA HAKUNA DAWA?" Okay, pause. This is a person whom is influencing millions and millions of urban youth kenyans. Yes, he is a media personality, with a top-rate radio show. Social sites such as facebook, twitter, myspace etc have become a haven of battles, cheap talk and arguments. It is not strange to witness a couple "going physical" on facebook or a ditched spouse getting back at his/her partner through facebook. Oh, did I tell you of the incident where I was so mad at a girlfriend of mine and I retaliated by calling her the "B" word on facebook? Yes, am also a victim of such behaviours (blush).

Paleki says goodbye

Southern Sudan's songbird, Paleki was the contestant to say goodbye to the Tusker Project Fame house this weekend.  Steve was saved by the audience while the faculty saved Msechu from Tanzania. That left the two female contestants, Paleki and Gaelle with their heads on the chopping board. Visibly surprised and emotional, a shaken Gaelle went back to join her fellow contestants while Paleki performed for the last time on the TPF stage. Gaelle has proved to be the proverbial cat with nine lives as she has braved her numerous probations, making it to the top five contestants.With only a week to go before the show wraps up, many a contestants have been sent parking, leaving the arguably less talented and soft-spoken Gaelle in the academy. On Sunday, the contestants sung their own compositions, with the judges terming them as "having grown." All five remaining contestants were put on probation "to level out the playing field" as Judge Ian  said.
